James Marshall was born 25 Feb 1777 in Augusta County, Virginia and died 15 Dec 1831 in Washington County, Indiana. [Washington County, Indiana, Jackson Twp. Cemeteries, 1989, Pg 8.]

James married Catherine Caldwell on 7 Feb 1805 at Tinkling Spring, Augusta County Virginia.

Catherine Caldwell was born 12 Jun 1781 in Augusta County, Virginia and died 10 Feb 1853 in Washington County, Indiana. [Washington County, Indiana, Jackson Twp. Cemeteries, 1989, Pg 8.]

James and Catherine are buried at Bethlehem Presbyterian Cemetery, Jackson Twp, Washington, Indiana.

James was a plantation owner in Augusta County, Virginia.  His parents were of Scotch-Irish descent. [History of Washington County, Indiana 1884, Pg 889.]

James served in the War of 1812.  He received a government deed at Champaign County, Ohio for 160 acres of land in Washington County, Indiana, possibly for serving in the War of 1812.  James and Catherine settled in Washington County in about 1818.

There are several letters to James from relatives in Virginia at the Washington County Historical Society, in Salem, Indiana. James paid $2.07 per year in county taxes.

James and Catherine had ten children:
